Performers at Disneyland, who bring beloved characters like Mickey Mouse and Cinderella to life, have voted to unionize after a three-day election concluding on Saturday.
The Actors’ Equity Association announced that cast members from the parades and characters departments at the Southern California resort overwhelmingly voted in favor of unionizing. The group, comprising roughly 1,700 workers, will now have the union as their bargaining representative.According to the association's website, 78.7% (953 votes) were in favor, while 21.3% (258 votes) were against.
"Disneyland is often called 'the place where dreams come true,' and for the Disney Cast Members who worked to organize a union, that dream came true today," said Actors’ Equity Association President Kate Shindle. The union already represents theatrical performers at Disney's parks in Florida.
Assuming no election challenges arise, the National Labor Relations Board’s regional director will certify the results within a week, the union noted.
The election was held on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday in Anaheim, California, following an earlier effort this year where workers submitted cards to form the unit known as "Magic United."
